Mark Murrell reports:
The finals of the North Circular League’s rapid cup knockout competitions were contested on 21 July 2022 by teams from Barking and Wanstead, with both Cup Finals being played together at Barking, who fielded two near full strength teams whilst the visitors game plans were slightly disrupted by a couple of late withdrawals. In the Lawrance Cup, a competition for clubs with first division teams, Barking held the rating advantage but only significantly on a single board, whilst there was nothing between the teams in the Finchley Cup, a competition for clubs with teams in the other divisions (pre-covid allocations were used for this purpose).
The first leg of the Lawrance Cup saw all four games drawn though not for want of trying and an opportunity may have gone begging as fortunes swung on board 4. The second leg saw honours again shared on top board and Wanstead taking the lead on board 3 (game below). Tactics eventually ran out for the Wanstead skip on board 4 as Barking levelled but with an inferior tie-break (bottom board elimination). For the second time in the match Vladimir held his higher rated opponent to a crucial draw, which was just enough for Wanstead to retain the Cup on tie-break.
