Hastings Chess Club is one of the lucky few in the country to own their own premises, in this case Pelton House, 2 Cornwallis Terrace, Hastings. The property was bought with money donated by a Club Member, Victor Pelton – who happened to be an estate agent – after whom the house is named and the Club opened there in 1954; unfortunately, Mr Pelton could not be there at the opening and he died the following year, aged 80. More details here from the Club’s website: Pelton House
Many Clubs make an annual pilgrimage to Hastings Chess Club, surroundings reeked in history, with the walls adorned by many historical items, mostly photographic, of masters who have played at the annual Hastings Congress.
Our match was played on two levels, with Boards 1-12 in the downstairs “through lounge” and the bottom four boards in the smaller upstairs match room. Once, they played matches the other way round, with the top boards upstairs.
WW did well to score 2½ on the top three boards, where it was good to see the return of David spearman. WW also secured the lower boards (9-15) by 4½-2½ – with good wins from Ryan, Alfie, Krishna and Nigel – but in between Hastings had the clear advantage on ratings, some by a significant margin and made a clean sweep of boards 4-8, scoring 5-0 there, though all were keenly contested.
The upshot was a close match which the home side won by 8-7. On the whole, it was another enjoyable – lazy, hazy – day by the sea.
