Central London League 2025-26

Having won Division 3 last season, the Club has accepted an invitation of promotion to Division 2 for 2025-26. The Club started life in the Central London League in Division 2, so this is a welcome return. In addition, the Club will again enter Division 4.

    Battersea 2 go by the team name of Battersea Galacticos in the league table, but were given as Batterasea 2 in the original fixtures list and it fits better in this tab layout, so we shall stick with that name. They beat Battersea 1 in the first match.

    Good result. Only two points between the teams on ratings. Shared top two and bottom two with Mark’s great result a piece down in the ending against a 1987 to save the match. Mark comments: “Finishing a piece down too – K v K+N. I was expecting B & N v K on increments but an opponent’s blunder led in sequence to the exchange of the B for my active N in the capture of Black’s last pawn. I had given up the B earlier for activity and complications rather than give my opponent an ending that was going to play itself. It was the third game to finish just before David, leaving boards 2 and 6 the last games in the room.”

    Our other win, from John Hodgson, involved a long R & P ending, which John thought was only a draw despite his having an extra pawn. John stopped scoring at 60 moves when his clock time dipped below five minutes, but thinks they could have played 100 moves; he got the verdict in the end. A bit of trivia: we won the toss by default (Battersea captain had not appeared by the appropriate time) so we were White on odds; we scored ½/3 with White and 2/2 with Black.

    Our two wins were the first and last games to finish; while Mark’s game was an important score, we were one down at 2½-1½ until John managed to scrape a win in his “drawn” R & P ending, which kept the organisers up late! Both our wins are included in the game board below.
