Essex Summer Rapid Knockout 2024

Page in course of construction

The match format for the Essex Summer Rapid Knockout is two matches of five boards at G20+10.

In the 2024 Essex Knockout Wanstead again entered three teams, styled A, B and C. Wanstead A were defending Cup Champions and Wanstead B were defending Plate Champions. In the 2024 competition while neither A nor B were successful in defending their titles (the B team because they won in R1) they were both undefeated over-the-board, both exiting on Board Count.

The first high-octane encounter of the competition. Brentwood were without IM Richard Pert, FM David Haydon and CM Stanley Badacsonyi, Wanstead were only missing IM Artur Sygulski.

Boards 1 and 2 were cancelled out by 4 and 5 so the match hinged on Board 3 where Partha recorded a double against WCM Nina Pert.

So Brentwood bow out, while WANSTEAD A proceed to the semi-finals where they await the winners of BARKING v Loughton.

There’s never more than a point between the teams in matches between Wanstead and Barking; often less. In this case, for a match decided on Board Count, it is remarkable that there were no draws out of ten games and four of the five boards featured a win-double with the points shared only on Board 2. It is even more remarkable that BARKING had the Board Count advantage despite winning both games on Board 5, a circumstance which could only occur with BARKING’s other win-double being on Board 1.

Both sides were missing a few players, but Wanstead still had a clear advantage on ratings.

The home side had just one moment to cheer in R1, when Brentwood newbie, Xander Bloom, scored on debut, collecting a hatful of material for the queen. The home team may have had a second point on top board, where Malcolm picked up a piece for a pawn, but Ian made good use of doubled rooks on the open g-file and a mobile pawn centre to turn the tables.

Mishaps aside, the visitors were nearly home, leading 4-1 at half time.

WANSTEAD B accomplished Round 2 without mishap to close out a convincing win by 8½-1½. By a curious coincidence, the scores in this match, replicated the round-by-round scores, though in the opposite sequence, of BRENTWOOD A v Chelmsford the previous evening, i.e. Brentwood’s A team v Chelmsford B won by 4½-½ in R1 and 4-1 in R2.

WANSTEAD B progressed to R2 to play the winners of Match B between BASILDON and Wanstead C.

Rapid ratings   *Basildon win on Board count

As tight as they come. A good day for Black. WANSTEAD B won the toss and chose Black on odds in Round 1, with the theory of taking the majority of Whites in R2 when they would know what they have to do. Winning R1 with the majority of Black games might therefore be viewed as a bonus. The downside is that BASILDON benefited from the same reverse logic and won R2, by the same score, with the majority of Black pieces. BASILDON’s wins on the top three boards sealed their tie-break advantage. Radu’s double over Terry against the ratings was the pivotal performance.

The story of R2, however, shows a BASILDON steal. Board 1 had Ian better out of the opening, but the game turned on a moment of “chess blindness”. Ian picked off David’s a-pawn on a7. David’s response, …b5 attacking Ian’s queen also discovered an attack on Ian’s a7 bishop. But the simple response axb6 ep would leave Ian a pawn up with the better game: in the post mortem David conceded that after axb6 ep he would be losing. Inexplicably, Ian totally missed the ep capture and let the piece go for two pawns.

WANSTEAD’s only win in R2 came on bottom board, so with the draw on Board 4, they needed at least a draw from the last game in play on Board 3. A double-edged queenless middlegame with Istvan a pawn to the good and with advanced central passed pawns had the crowd enthralled (no-one had left). It looked good for WANSTEAD, but against the clock, now at blitz speeds, it was a different picture and with a marauding rook Arunas chipped away at Istvan’s advantage. The game turned when Arunas picked up the exchange, Istvan’s rook having been en prise for some four moves – apparently neither player had time to notice it. Even then, with reduced material and still with the passed pawns, it seemed that Istvan had enough for the draw, but it was not to be. Arunas stole the win and BASILDON were in the Semi-Finals.
