3rd SCCU London Club Championship – Wanstead and Woodford Chess Club

Held 22 June 2024, at St Luke’s Church in Kidderpore Avenue, Finchley, the 3rd SCCU London Club Championship was a 4-board Rapid team tournament over six rounds, Swiss pairing. There were three sections: Major (U2100), Intermedate (U1850) and Minor (U1600).

The Major, however, did not have enough entries to play as a Swiss so, we assume, was played with individual “Jamboree” pairings. We were, however, able to meet up with former Wanstead member John Duggan, playing for Beckenham & Bromley. And among the other Major entrants, current Wanstead member John Hodgson, playing for Streatham.

Wanstead entered four teams, two in the Intermediate section and two in the Minor. The Wanstead teams were styled “Dynamoes” and “Cavaliers” in the Inter and “All Stars” and “Warriors” in the Minor.

In the Intermediate the Dynamoes set off with a 3½-½ win over Treasury and didn’t look back, winning the first five rounds, before sharing a nervy last round 2-2 to ride out the winners of the section.

Cavaliers did less well, losing their first two rounds before opening their account with a 2-2 draw in Round 3. This meagre crumb they celebrated by winning their next match 4-0, only to slip back with two defeats in the last two rounds. This modest score, however, allowed the Cavaliers to finish 4th of 14 teams; placings in order of Match Points, while the Cavaliers scored 16½ Game Points, which was second only to Dynamoes.

In the Minor the All Stars opened with a steady 2-2 against DHSS 2, but lost their next two by 3-1 before posting their first success with a 3-1 win against She Plays to Win 2 – to which the answer was “we do too”. (Mary Cawdery was playing for She Plays to Win 1.) After a third defeat, All Stars signed off with a 4-0 whitewash against Latymer School. All Stars finished 11th of 18 teams.

The Warriors had a much steadier course, posting no fewer than four 2-2 results, but lost the other two, finishing 15th of 18 teams.

The 2025 tournament is on 21 June 2025 and we have again entered four teams.
