Report by Ben Harte On Tuesday 18th July 2023 IM Daniel Cawdery from South Africa visited our chess club. He played a simultaneous exhibition match against 24 of our junior players. All of our players had the Black pieces as is usual in a Simul. Each player had to wait for the IM to appear before making their move, but they had to have a move ready to play immediately he arrived at their board. This was a great opportunity for […]

The Junior Chess Coaching Club turned out in force this evening for their return to Wanstead House. Taking advantage of the continued prevention of meetings of the main club with an expanded three hour session, managed bubbles enabled 23 junior players to display at the first opportunity their enthusiasm for the game under the direction once again of Ben Harte and Mark Murrell. Ben Harte reports that the Warriors won their first J4NCL match by a small margin. “Over-the-board” we only lost one game, but with one player missing we lost two points and suffered a penalty point. Still we won 4-3, so well done. Our next opposition is likely to be stronger; so when we get to team selection, to avoid any defaults players will have to set an alarm on their phones or their parent’s phone! I was impressed by the […]

Mark Murrell reports that the Wanstead Warriors are now in the J4NCL, with their first match on Thursday, 1 Oct. Junior 4NCL matches are two games of G10+5 versus the same opponent. There was only room for one team. The squad will have eight junior ECF members (four board matches) so we will run an all-play-all ECF OL-rated event at the same time so that all the squad play regularly at the same time and make use of their memberships. […]
