This page gives the Rapid team events run by the North Circular Chess League.
In the summer events each match is comprised of two rounds played at G20+10 (Game in 20 minutes + 10 seonds per move for each player); equates to 30 minutes each for 60 moves – longer if the game goes beyond 60 moves.
There are two summer team tournaments, in which we entered a total of five teams, the Baum Trophy, in which we entered two teams (BT1 and BT2) and the Rapid U1650 team tournament in which we entered a further three teams, styled NR3, NR4 and NR5. The matches between the Wanstead teams all took place as usual on “Bonanza Night” which was played on 28 May 2024.
There are also two KO Cups, the Lawrance Cup and the Finchley Cup, which are played during the regular league season. The Lawrance Cup is for Division A teams, the Finchley Cup is for teams in Divisions B and C. We have entered three teams, one team in the Lawrance Cup “LC1” and two in the Finchley Cup “FC2 and “FC3”. The tabs for these Cup games have been moved from the NCCL match page under standard play games, so the LC1, FC2 and FC3 tabs are filled to date, while the other tabs are in course of preparation. The NCCL competitions allow teams to agree to play additional boards over the stated minimum for each competition.
All the games played by Wanstead members in these competitions count towards the John Philpott Trophy.

Wanstead seconds, in the Finchley Cup Rapid KO, skirted with the dark side, as did their first team colleagues in the Division A encounter with Ilford, who were playing alongside, and came close to meeting the same fate, but scraped through.
The match starkly divided into two. Loughton “shaded” the top two boards by 3½-½ and the Wanstead top two had their colleagues on the the bottom two boards to thank for their two “win doubles”; just as well, as the tie-break in the event of the scores finishing level is elminimation of bottom board. By a strange quirk, the average rating difference between the two teams in this match was identical to the Division A match, Wanstead 2 having the edge over Loughton by the same average of 262 points a board.

In typical WWCC tradition Wanstead 3 progressed to the Final of the Finchley Cup at the expense of the higher-rated Wanstead 2 and will meet the victors between Barking 2 and Enfield 1 who play on 4 February 2025.
Cup and Baum Trophy encounters in the NCCL usually comprise two games with colours reversed. For Gala Night we made use of the substitution rule with weaker players substituting for the stronger players in the first round to leave time for the festive blitz event involving the full club. For the Cup match the NCCL second team squad in Division B was split from the available players to provide the second leg pairings for this Wanstead 2 v Wanstead 3 match played over 6 boards (extended from the minimum of 4). These players were substituted (save for board 6) in the first leg by players drawn from our NCCL third team in the rating limited U1675 Division C; with Wanstead 3 on all boards being represented by an all junior team (11 or under), making their second appearance of the season and with two debutants in action too. With one minor exception to accommodate one of the junior debutants Wanstead 2 outrated their Wanstead 3 opponents and on paper were favourites to progress.
The Juniors played their part in securing victory for Wanstead 3 narrowly losing by a single point. The top order of Wanstead 2 failed to compensate whilst appearing to suffer from a Hogmanay hangover; managing just two draws on boards 1 to 4 (7 to 10 on the match card); sufficiently far adrift to give Wanstead 3 the match by a 1 point margin.
