    Both sides were below strength, Wanstead significantly so. Writtle were missing regulars Paul Williamson (1928) and David Millward (1959). This is also one of the fixtures when we can expect to see FM Andrew Lewis (2344). This season, Jens Mueller (1982) and Olga Latypova (1955) have each played one game. Against this, Wanstead were missing John Cawdery (2149), Partha Mulay (2092), Paul Bancroft (1988), while Terry Whitton (1931) has been a regular and Ashley Freeman (2021) has made a couple of appearances.

    Philip has played a couple of times this season, otherwise the bottom three were all pressed into action for their first appearances. It was the Wanstead tail that wagged strongly, to add to a win for David and three draws, crossing the winning line with two games to spare. Philip was the only casualty, coming second in a K&P ending, before Ruquayyah wrapped up a win against the redoubtable Russell White in the last game to finish.

    Wanstead currently head the table with 12/12 from their six matches, closely followed by Brentwood with 10/10 from 5, having one match in hand.

    That was a good battling 4-4 result, in front for most of the match too, that sets up a potential end of season decider at Brentwood on Tuesday 2 June; the last match of Division 1. Before then work to do for both teams.

    The highlights from last night, another worthy draw for John Cawdery  with IM Richard Pert on 1, young Ashwin GopiKrishna converting a Bishop & 2 Pawns each ending like an old pro, Philip Staniland neutralising his opponent’s lone past pawn on the 6th to leave a won ending and Paul Bancroft delivering checkmate to Trevor Coote’s King in the middle of the board pressing his clock just in time (12 secs) having forgotten to do so after the first of a two-move forced beautiful finish. (The throng of observers did well not to intervene!)

That was a good battling 4-4 result, in front for most of the match too, that sets up a potential end of season decider at Brentwood on Tuesday 2 June; the last match of Division 1. Before then work to do for both teams.

The highlights from last night, another worthy draw for John Cawdery  with IM Richard Pert on 1, young Ashwin GopiKrishna converting a Bishop & 2 Pawns each ending like an old pro, Philip Staniland neutralising his opponent’s lone past pawn on the 6th to leave a won ending and Paul Bancroft delivering checkmate to Trevor Coote’s King in the middle of the board pressing his clock just in time (12 secs) having forgotten to do so after the first of a two-move forced beautiful finish. (The throng of observers did well not to intervene!)

    What a result for Wanstead II against a team that more often than not in recent years have been League Champions and are always in contention.

    Admittedly Writtle were not at full strength but nonetheless outrating our top six by a good margin and winning the toss too.

    Yet we found ourselves with a 2-0 lead with wins by myself and Ashwin which must have disappointed both of our opponents. It could have been three, with Terry taking a perpetual instead. On top board Ashley made his first appearance of the season and it was worth the wait holding Russell White to the draw with black. It was not all one-way traffic with Edgar playing down the order creating a passed pawn that took out Daniel.

    3-2 with three to play. Andy provided our third win having played himself back into form to ensure a valuable point in our battle against relegation. Ian lost to young Shrishti leaving Philip to play for the win against the opposition captain from an inferior middle game position. A pawn up in the ending, the draw was good enough for an excellent team win by 4½-3½ and two unexpected match points a double bonus.

    The last time our Essex first and second teams were both in Division 1 was back in the Covid-19 truncated season of 2019-20 where Team 2 was running Team 1 close. But Team 1, having seen Team 2 beat Writtle away by the odd point on 6 November, could not emulate that result, losing to Writtle at home by the same score on 10 March.

    What a result!

    Writtle perhaps expected WW2 to be as strong as the side which beat them at Wanstead on 10 February, so they fielded for the return match an even stronger side, led off by FM Andy Lewis, but missing Russell White, 2154 (2126). But in a busy week, with the Club Championship R6 the day before and matches on Wednesday and Thursday, with WW1 on duty the following day away to Basildon, the top four WW2 boards of the 10 February success were simply not available and that was just the start of Mark’s problems in fielding four teams in two days.

    Writtle’s side were all over 1900 while WW2 were all under 1900; put more starkely: Writtle’s Board 8 out-rated the whole of the visiting WW2. Writtle heavily outrated the visitors by an average of 277 points a board, using each team’s September ratings. Using current Live ratings, the former still applies, but WW2 ratings have improved, while Writtle’s have declined, so that Writtle’s average advantage was only 241 points per board. Enough statistics.

    Wanstead’s team spirit, which we enjoy top to bottom throughout the Club, means one thing: the bigger the challenge the harder we fight.

    All the games were fully engaged for a long time into the match, with Writtle made to work very hard for the points they earned. WW2 took an early lead after Daniel’s draw with your correspondent being the beneficiary of Rob Killeen’s unsound sacrificial attack. This was cancelled out by Kerry Chilvers on bottom board, but it was then a while before the next result. Nick held Paul Williamson in the other drawn game. Then Andy Swales gave WW2 the lead for the second time with a fantastic result when he defeated Ivan Myall in a minor piece ending. John Moore finally got the better of Ryan to level the scores once more, before Pete produced WW2’s result of the match in defeating Edgar Wilson in a B+Ps ending (same coloured bishops); tremendous! Writtle now had to win the last game to finish, against skipper Mark, who took his titled opponent all the way. While Mark had gone a piece down, he had mobilised a group of three passed pawns on the f- and g-files and Andy Lewis had to exhibit good footwork with his extra piece to neutralise this threat; this he managed to do, equalising the scores to draw the match.

    The “easiest” of our three wins is given below. The other two may not be available as they were both completed with the players being under five minutes, so stopped recording the moves as allowed by the rules.

    To finish with a fact: despite Writtle’s astonishing 20 Essex League Championships in 42 years – they have not beaten WW2 since 10 January 2019, when Writtle won 7-1. WW2 have kept Writtle at bay on three subsequent occasions: on 6 November 2019 WW2 won away Writtle 3½-4½ WW2, the last time WW2 were in Division I. Now this year, 10 February 2026 above, at Home, WW2 4½-3½ Writtle and this match 4-4.

What a result for Wanstead II against a team that more often than not in recent years have been League Champions and are always in contention.

Admittedly Writtle were not at full strength but nonetheless outrating our top six by a good margin and winning the toss too.

Yet we found ourselves with a 2-0 lead with wins by myself and Ashwin which must have disappointed both of our opponents. It could have been three, with Terry taking a perpetual instead. On top board Ashley made his first appearance of the season and it was worth the wait holding Russell White to the draw with black. It was not all one-way traffic with Edgar playing down the order creating a passed pawn that took out Daniel.

3-2 with three to play. Andy provided our third win having played himself back into form to ensure a valuable point in our battle against relegation. Ian lost to young Shrishti leaving Philip to play for the win against the opposition captain from an inferior middle game position. A pawn up in the ending, the draw was good enough for an excellent team win by 4½-3½ and two unexpected match points a double bonus.

The last time our Essex first and second teams were both in Division 1 was back in the Covid-19 truncated season of 2019-20 where Team 2 was running Team 1 close. But Team 1, having seen Team 2 beat Writtle away by the odd point on 6 November, could not emulate that result, losing to Writtle at home by the same score on 10 March.

What a result!

Writtle perhaps expected WW2 to be as strong as the side which beat them at Wanstead on 10 February, so they fielded for the return match an even stronger side, led off by FM Andy Lewis, but missing Russell White, 2154 (2126). But in a busy week, with the Club Championship R6 the day before and matches on Wednesday and Thursday, with WW1 on duty the following day away to Basildon, the top four WW2 boards of the 10 February success were simply not available and that was just the start of Mark’s problems in fielding four teams in two days.

Writtle’s side were all over 1900 while WW2 were all under 1900; put more starkely: Writtle’s Board 8 out-rated the whole of the visiting WW2. Writtle heavily outrated the visitors by an average of 277 points a board, using each team’s September ratings. Using current Live ratings, the former still applies, but WW2 ratings have improved, while Writtle’s have declined, so that Writtle’s average advantage was only 241 points per board. Enough statistics.

Wanstead’s team spirit, which we enjoy top to bottom throughout the Club, means one thing: the bigger the challenge the harder we fight.

All the games were fully engaged for a long time into the match, with Writtle made to work very hard for the points they earned. WW2 took an early lead after Daniel’s draw with your correspondent being the beneficiary of Rob Killeen’s unsound sacrificial attack. This was cancelled out by Kerry Chilvers on bottom board, but it was then a while before the next result. Nick held Paul Williamson in the other drawn game. Then Andy Swales gave WW2 the lead for the second time with a fantastic result when he defeated Ivan Myall in a minor piece ending. John Moore finally got the better of Ryan to level the scores once more, before Pete produced WW2’s result of the match in defeating Edgar Wilson in a B+Ps ending (same coloured bishops); tremendous! Writtle now had to win the last game to finish, against skipper Mark, who took his titled opponent all the way. While Mark had gone a piece down, he had mobilised a group of three passed pawns on the f- and g-files and Andy Lewis had to exhibit good footwork with his extra piece to neutralise this threat; this he managed to do, equalising the scores to draw the match.

The “easiest” of our three wins is given below. The other two may not be available as they were both completed with the players being under five minutes, so stopped recording the moves as allowed by the rules.

To finish with a fact: despite Writtle’s astonishing 20 Essex League Championships in 42 years – they have not beaten WW2 since 10 January 2019, when Writtle won 7-1. WW2 have kept Writtle at bay on three subsequent occasions: on 6 November 2019 WW2 won away Writtle 3½-4½ WW2, the last time WW2 were in Division I. Now this year, 10 February 2026 above, at Home, WW2 4½-3½ Writtle and this match 4-4.

    Wanstead 3rds outrated Southend I by an average 71 points a board, so the result might be viewed as a form result. Might have been a little better as Pete, in the last game to finish close to 10.30, reported his brain was fogged as he lost a R+P ending (only one passed pawn each which they queened on consecutive moves) which a fresher Pete would certainly have held, if not won.
