Club Championship – Round 2 – 22 October

The draw for Round 2 is published.  All games will be played on the 22nd October save for those where dispensation to play on an alternative date has been granted. Participants are requested to be seated by 7:30pm when the Club will pay its respects to my predecessor, the late Laurie Burtt, whose funeral will take place a few days prior on 18th October. Kyan wins Game 2 – Championship shared!

The second and final game of the Club Championship play-off between Kyan Bui and Manuel Perez Carballo finished in and exciting R & P ending, with Kyan picking off a couple of pawns, but cruically getting his king back to stop Manuel’s K-side passed pawns, whereas, Manuel’s king was still on the K-side and was powerless to prevent Kyan queening his b-pawn to win the game. Play-off 1

Manuel 1-0 Kyan Manuel was White in Game 1 and opened with 1 e4. Kyan replied with the Sicilian Defence. After a cagey opening, Manuel made the first aggressive move with g4. After Manuel castled first, on the Q-side, Kyan for a while kept his powder dry. The game came alight the moment Kyan castled K-side. Manuel sacrificed his h-pawn for open lines. Championship Play-off games

The result fo the 9-round Club Championship tournament 2018-19 was a tie on 7½ points between Manuel Perez Carballo and Kyan Bui. The two game play-off will take place to decide the Championship, Game 1 being played on Thursday, 6 June and Game 2 being played Thursday, 13 June. The draw for colours has taken place and Manuel drew the White pieces in Game 1. Both games will be broadcast live on the Club’s website.
