Not the latest popularity poll of letters of the alphabet, but the fortunes of the Club’s teams in the Essex Knockout. Wanstead A and Wanstead B, who did the Cup and Plate double in 2023, have both exited from the current competition, though each did so in the most noble way: a 5-5 scoreline, losing on Board Count, so undefeated over-the-board. John keeps his cool

The first Knockout Champion is John Cawdery, overcoming Ashley’s “draw odds” advantage to win a 72 move game, which was screened live on the Internet as it unfolded. This was an extra point of interest for the players in the other room, contesting “Bonanza Night”, with the KO final being screened alongside the Bonanza pairings.
