London League 2026-27

Once again, we had a relegation scare, having finished in next to last place in Division 2, but once more stay in Division 2.

Two teams are normally relegated (two up, two down). However, Wood Green have withdrawn from Division 1. Wood Green’s place in Division 1 was filled one more promotion from Division 2 and one less team being relegated from Division 2 and below. As a result, Wanstead & Woodford Chess Club once more avoided the drop. The number of teams in Divisions 2 and 3 have been reduced by one team and we have nine fixtures instead of 10.

Not the start we wanted.

It’s difficult to remember the last time Dulwich were not headed by the redoubtable duo of Randall and Pridding, giving Dulwich such a strong lead. But Wanstead’s duo of Cawdery and Mulay were equal to the challenge.

We were missing Ruqayyah and Keith was able to complete a team only on Monday. Even then Andy Swales dropped out at short notice – we suspect on the day – but Paul Barclay was available to step into the breach.

It’s not often that Ashwin and David both lose in the same match and we were only able to chalk up two wins, one of these is given below.
