Not the latest popularity poll of letters of the alphabet, but the fortunes of the Club’s teams in the Essex Knockout. Wanstead A and Wanstead B, who did the Cup and Plate double in 2023, have both exited from the current competition, though each did so in the most noble way: a 5-5 scoreline, losing on Board Count, so undefeated over-the-board. SCCU/London Clubs team rapid double champions After six rounds of unforgiving G25+5 rapid chess and, if it was not already hot enough outside, a nail-biting final round, Wanstead teams found themselves club Champions in both the Intermediate (team average not more than 1850) and in the Minor (team average of not more than 1600). The “Club evening that wasn’t” turned into a Christmas Cracker to remember. Originally, Wanstead House was not going to be open on this last Tuesday before Christmas, but reversal of this decision allowed one more Club evening for which, of course, nothing had been planned. Making use of a Tuesday with only a 4 board Essex Minor match in the calendar, Krishna Raikundalia devised and ran a very different kind of handicap tournament from that with which our members are familiar.
