The Dark Side was abroad tonight

The two North Circular League home fixtures for Wanstead teams on a sodden gridlocked evening came close to being a double disaster for the Home sides. All four teams showed great perseverence to reach the venue and ensure no defaults. In Division A Wanstead 1, defending League Champions and comfortably the stronger side, fell to a shock defeat against Ilford by 4-2. Playing alongside in the Finchley Cup, Wanstead 2, also the clear favourites on paper, came close to a […]

A famous victory by the sea

Mark Murrell skipped for this one, reporting on “Breaking News”: Sea, sand, sunshine and a fine away day performance particularly by Voldi and the band. A cluster of wins in lower boards and crucial middle order holds. All-club match play at its best. Yes, we won.  https://lms.englishchess.org.uk/lms/league_fixture/254439 We have added our additional commentary on the make-up of the Hastings team – stronger than of recent times – with a flavour of the closing stages, which you can find under the Sundry Fixtures tab; […]

Calendar web page returns; Team skip vacancies

Website Calendar Page In response to popular demand, the Calendar page has returned to the Club’s website. There was a Calendar page up until 2019-2020, but this disappeared following introduction of 4-digit ECF ratings. The two events are not actually connected, except for the Webmaster’s need to re-write the Results program – partly to adjust to 4-digit ratings, but more to adopt a new design of the software. The original program populated the site with team results and stats and […]

A and B are out, but C is still in

Not the latest popularity poll of letters of the alphabet, but the fortunes of the Club’s teams in the Essex Knockout. Wanstead A and Wanstead B, who did the Cup and Plate double in 2023, have both exited from the current competition, though each did so in the most noble way: a 5-5 scoreline, losing on Board Count, so undefeated over-the-board. WANSTEAD A had the first round Bye as defending Champions, then defeated the hot favourites BRENTWOOD A, Away, by […]

A grand day out

SCCU/London Clubs team rapid double champions After six rounds of unforgiving G25+5 rapid chess and, if it was not already hot enough outside, a nail-biting final round, Wanstead teams found themselves club Champions in both the Intermediate (team average not more than 1850) and in the Minor (team average of not more than 1600). Going into the last round the Dynamos in the 12 team Inter and the All Stars in the 18 team Minor had the Championships in their […]
