A grand day out

SCCU/London Clubs team rapid double champions

After six rounds of unforgiving G25+5 rapid chess and, if it was not already hot enough outside, a nail-biting final round, Wanstead teams found themselves club Champions in both the Intermediate (team average not more than 1850) and in the Minor (team average of not more than 1600).

Going into the last round the Dynamos in the 12 team Inter and the All Stars in the 18 team Minor had the Championships in their own hands, with advantageous positions too in the first tie break of game points. In the case of the Dynamos, they needed a little help from their friends, the Cavaliers, but the All Stars were far more clinical and did not need the tie-break assist from the opponents of their nearest rivals, Guildford Juniors. They did, however, have a Warrior amongst their number following an inspired realignment of personnel on the eve of the Championships by teams’ manager, Mark Murrell. The Warriors were the third highest placed junior team (on the 4th tie break) of the seven that participated in the Minor.

The moon was West Finchley and it was all to do with chess, not cheese. Our featured picture depicts our two winning teams and some of their assistants. Fuller report to follow.
