Championship fireworks

The third round of the Club Championship featured an audacious rook sacrifice by Tournament Controller, Mark Murrell, against Ashley Freeman. While cold analysis showed the sacrifice to be unsound, it unsettled Ashley to the extent that he failed to play the best response and Mark secured a winning advantage, subsequently denying Ashley any vestige of counterplay. The unlikely Club Championship

Round 1 of the Club Championship – out of consideration at the start of a season spent mostly in lockdown – took place on 29 June in the spacious surroundings of the Boaden Hall at Wanstead House. Kyan levels the scores to share the Championship

Needing a win to share the Online Club Championship Kyan went for the jugular with the Fried Liver Attack. The early skirmishes netted him a pawn, which he nursed to a decisive advantage with an eventual 3-1 Q-side pawn majority. Just one game to go

The play-off for the Club Online Championship has now crystalised to a last head-to-head between Ashley and Kyan after Ashley won his second game against Istvan to gain at least a share of the Championship. Scores are now Ashley 3/3, Kyan 2/3, so Kyan has to win the last game, with Ashley, to share the title; Kyan has White. The last game will be played at 7.30 pm on Tuesday, 30 March, on lichess. While the Redbridge teams did battle in 4NCL Online, Istvan and Ashley contested Game 2 in the Online Club Championship play-off and resulted in a win for Ashley.
