Septuagenarian speed double

Like fine wine… A week after securing the Lightning Championship, Terry Whitton added the Blitz Championship, on tie-break. Terry finished level on points with John Cawdery – in his first season with the Club – each scoring 6/7; congratulations to both. They met in Round 3 and Terry secured the point on a swindle (his own words). While John won all his other games, he required a slip-up from Terry to wrest the trophy. In Round 4, Terry allowed a […]

Septuagenarian Lightning Champion

Terry Whitton was in imperious form to win the Lightning Championship with a 100% score 6/6. There was a fine performance also from Emmet Clarke clear second on 5/6, though not having played Terry, probably due to his second round loss, so that he came up on the rails in the finishing straight. The podium was completed by a crowded third step with no fewer than five players finishing on 4/6. 1 – Terry Whitton, 6/6; Lightning Champion 2 – […]

Ashley was impressed by Mark’s play to the extent of providing in-depth annotations which we are happy to publish – find the game on […]

The unlikely Club Championship

Round 1 of the Club Championship – out of consideration at the start of a season spent mostly in lockdown – took place on 29 June in the spacious surroundings of the Boaden Hall at Wanstead House. We think this is the first time we have held a Club night in the Hall, the departure allowing the 12 games to be played in four groups of three single board games with generous spacing between groups. Normal service resumed

Tournament Secretary, Mark Murrell, reports Rule of 6 Rapids It did not take long for Chairman Ian to shed the cobwebs with a convincing full house victory in the top section of the Rule of Six G10+5 Rapid round robin that included rare (these days) tournament appearances from Paul Barclay and myself. Once reallocations were made following a couple of late withdrawals and revised pairing and results sheet created, all-play-alls run themselves. Rule of 6 Rapid A Section B, another […]
