This trophy, which commemorates the Club’s co-founder, Roy Wagstaff (1922-1989), is awarded annually to the Member achieving the highest aggregate score in standard play Club activities across the board: Lightning Championship, Blitz Championship, Club Championship and their best 15 scores in Matches for the Club.
Competition period: 1 June 2022 – 31 May 2023.
In the table below, the shaded columns with bold text and ‘+’ in the top row, are the columns which contribute to the total column (Lightning Ch., Blitz Ch., Club Championship, Match/Ladder component). The other columns are for information.
A word about the Match/Ladder component which sometimes causes confusion. Firstly, Ladder games are included with the match scores. Secondly, why do we limit the number of results? The reason for this is in three parts: i) that we have a separate trophy for the total points scored in standard play matches, the David Wood Memorial Trophy; ii) if all a member’s match scores were included, there would be a gross imbalance between match scores and the other facets, so the winner of the David Wood would most likely also win the Wagstaff; iii) not every member can play as many games as our most active members, so limiting the number of match scores included makes a more even competition. The number of match scores is limited to make a reasonable balance between standard play games and the speed games of the Lightning and the Blitz. To calculate the Match/Ladder component’s best 15 scores: if a member has 15 or more wins, then they have the maximum score for this element, 15 points. Members who have less than 15 wins are then able to make up the difference with draws they have secured until they have included a total of 15 to results (e.g. if you only have, say, 8 wins, then you include them all and add up to seven draws, if you have them, to make 15 results, then your match score will be 11½ [8+3½]). If a member does not have as many as 15 wins and draws combined, they include all their wins and draws.
Congratulations to Philip Staniland for winning this trophy for the first time, with consistent 5 point scores in each of the individual events and the maximum 15 wins in matches for the Club.
