To advance up the ladder you need to beat a player above you in the ladder and you then take the rung of your opponent, pushing those overtaken down 1.

A night off sees a one rung snake slip for every consecutive night off.

With three Road Map Stage 2 Tuesdays to go before our eagerly awaited possible return to Wanstead House, Tournament Secretary, Mark Murrell, has devised a new flexible tournament combining an online arena and a traditional ladder but with a snakes twist.
The aim is to continue to hold regular club activity on a Tuesday evening and offer online chess at slower time controls, which have proved to be the most popular of our online events.

The Snake Lader was played over Tuesdays 27 April, 4 and 11 May and Thursdays 20 and 27 May, 3, 10 and 17 June.

Competition details

  • Played on by individual challenges according to LMS pairing cards;
  • Played at 7:30pm on online Tuesday club nights until 11 May and thereafter, if extended, in the vacated online Thursday night match slots;
  • All moves in 60 minutes plus 15 second increments (G60+15);
  • ECF online standard rated (ECF fair play rules and the Club’s Online policy apply);
  • Aim is to top the ladder (or section of it) or gain the most points or both by the end date;
  • Initial ladder populated in descending order of rating (ECF online standard, ECF standard, Controller estimate); late entrants join on the lowest rung;
  • Pairings by “many hats” aiming to maximise opportunities to climb, follow player opponent level choice for the round, different opponents where possible, avoiding rematches in close proximity and colour balancing; published at the start of play;
  • Each round state preference for a similar rated opponent (Arena pairing) or any opponent (Ladder paring) or unavailable (night off, at the expense of a snake slide);
  • To avoid blockages, a night off will entail a snake slide of one rung increasing by a further rung for each consecutive night off (e.g. 1st night off one rung slide, a night off the following week will see a slide of another two rungs, a third consecutive night off will see a slide of another three rungs);
  • Under the “any” option state the number of rungs you want to try to climb that week;
  • A win against an opponent higher up the ladder raises you to their rung and your opponent and those in between drop a rung;
  • 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss;
  • 1 bonus point added if the game was played with the black pieces;
  • 1 further bonus point added for a game played against a stronger rated opponent by 150 rating points (this may be varied once entries are closed) or more and the “any” option was selected;
  • Play as little or as much as you like; availability to play must be declared by 7:30pm the day before (the more games you play the more points you accrue just like an arena).
