Ben on Battle 2: – Friday 13th November smiled more kindly on us than Friday 20th and more than the Tuesday in between. Aix-en-Provence reeling from our good win the previous Friday signed up some even stronger players to do battle with us on the 20th. We added to our strength too, but we were also short of players from the previous week. The battle was good, but on 20th November Aix-en-Provence were convincing winners. So at one each there will be a decider a bit later on and probably under a new Lichess format. Watch this space and try to secure GM norms in preparation!
Our Juniors also battled with the Aix-en-Provence Juniors, a group that Tim has built to take on Juniors from all around France. Tim has clearly done an excellent job. Probably only our top two Juniors were able to compete properly with them, but the next group of Juniors are not so far behind. Their Juniors did win Tuesday’s battle convincingly, but that simply makes their Juniors the target standard for our Juniors to meet! I am sure our Juniors will want to take them on again in 2021.
These three Battles have been an excellent lock-down activity and a great opportunity for new players who have not had the chance previously to play against our friends in Aix-en-Provence. We hope that in the not too distant future, our friends from Aix will be able to come and visit us again in person. And thank-you to Aix-en-Provence for suggesting these lock-down battles!
